Obituary for Petru CIULEI

Petru Ciulei (May 13, 1939 – November 13, 2022)

Petru was born in the spring of 1939 to Nicolae and Maria, (nee Aron) in a small farming village in the middle of the Carpatian mountains near Brasov Romania.

He passed away peacefully on Sunday November 13th due to liver complications. He spent his last days in the company of his children and the amazing staff in ICU/CCU at Brantford General Hospital.

Married to Elisabeth, (nee Pantazi), for 37 years he leaves behind three children, Carmen Medeiros, Liviu and Adrian Ciulei. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Nicholas, Daniel, Deanna, Emma, and Julian.

As a young man Petru was the first of his six siblings to venture away from home and start a life in the city. He was as hard working as he was stubborn towards authority and found ways to get ahead and do things differently than most of those under the heavy foot of communist Romania. In 1982, when he had enough of government control, he left everything behind, packed up the family and dragged them across thousands of miles to land in Canada.

As a new Canadian he did what he knew best…worked hard, raised his kids and he would see them start their own families.

Dad was an avid cyclist. His love for the sport, picked up during his army days in the old country, kept him on two wheels well into his 50’s when he would cycle to work and back to stay fit. And this before it was cool to do so.

Those who knew him well will remember him as a man who enjoyed a good prank, loved to laugh at the smallest things and would give the shirt off his back to those close to him.

Petru was a gifted gardener who knew no limits on what and how much he could grow on Woolwich Street. From his home-made copper kettle, he would distill the craziest spirits out of any fruit he could buy at the St. Jacob’s farmer’s market. And one does not forget his smoking meat lockers… bacon, sausage, ribs…name it. All this he would gladly share with the neighbours or anyone who happened to come by the house, which was open door policy before this policy existed.

We will all fondly remember and miss stories of his childhood, his underhanded sarcasm and easy laugh!

Rest in peace dad!
