Obituary

Macdonald, Hugh passed away peacefully after a short battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) on January 2, 2020 at Sakura House, Woodstock.

Hugh was a lover of life and beauty and lived a good and happy life. Born in Glasgow in 1938, he fell in love with Thérèse(Terry) Margaret Dickie from Ayr, Scotland in his early twenties. In 1962, they made a bold move to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and later moved to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where they adopted and raised their beloved daughters, Claire, and Veronica on a farm just outside of Salisbury (now Harare). He was never happier than when tending his prized roses or cactus garden and he loved all animals. At one point he had four cats, six dogs, a cockatoo and a pet lamb roaming in and out of the house.

In 1985, he immigrated to Canada with Terry and the girls, with sponsorship from Willis and Nancy Jacques of Petrolia, who had hosted Claire as a Rotary Exchange Student in 1982. In 1987, Terry passed away after a brief battle with cancer and in 1989 he married Margaret Collins, who he loved until the day he died.

Hugh is predeceased by Terry and his brothers Alastair and Robin. He leaves behind his sister Maggie; Margaret; Claire & her husband Bob, granddaughters Cass and Sammy; Veronica and her husband Dave, granddaughter Jenna (Dave) and grandson Kyle (Shelby) and great-granddaughter Sawyer; and sisters-in-law Sally, Rita, Adrienne, Ruth, and Mary.

A memorial mass will take place at Sacred Heart Church, 131 Thames Street N, Ingersoll, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. To be followed by a reception and a wee dram at Henderson Hall. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Sakura House, the Ingersoll Pipe Band, or the Sacred Heart Parish Health Ministry in Hugh’s memory.

Funeral arrangements to the McBeath-Dynes Funeral Home 246 Thames Street South Ingersoll 519-425-1600.

Such fond memories of Claire with us as a student and then having Hugh and Terry move here with Veronica as well! Lots of great memories of us all together at the house in Petrolia and Hugh with his pipe! Such a hard move for he and his family but he took it all in stride - happy to be here in Canada! We will treasure all those memories and keep him in our hearts!
