Obituary for Fred CANNELL

CANNELL, Frederick Thomas (Fred)

Fred loved the town of Ingersoll. He loved its history and always enjoyed talking with members of the community about the people who had lived in Ingersoll, where they once lived, and the businesses they operated.

Fred was an avid sportsman and played competitive hockey and baseball. From an early age, Fred’s skill level often had him playing with older players. Fred also umpired baseball and refereed hockey. Fred cleared the ice at the old Ingersoll arena, in those days by shovel, often for only a hot dog and a coke and some additional ice time. Fred would do anything to be close to the game. Throughout the years Fred was always running into people that he had played sports with. Sports gave Fred the opportunity to meet a great deal of people and travel throughout the region.

Fred was always on the lookout for card game and a couple of beers. If there was some betting at cards, so much the better.

Fred’s work with the McNivens at Killeen Acres was the highlight of his many jobs. Jack and Donny McNiven introduced Fred to working in the horseracing industry and all the people associated with it. Fred often reminisced about the many people he met including, veterinarians, owners, drivers, and blacksmiths and so on. Fred thoroughly enjoyed working for the McNivens and always talked about how well they treated him. Fred’s love of horse racing often took him to the local tracks. Later in life, with mobility becoming an issue, Fred watched horse racing on television.

Fred lived a life full of the love of sports and the enjoyment and fellowship of friends. May you rest in peace Fred.
