Obituary for FRCS FACS May 27 1932-October 8  2016 Sushil Kumar Warma (Eng. FRCS Can) MD

October 8, 2016 marked the death of Sushil Warma, a friend of the Ingersoll community and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Sushil passed away peacefully with his wife, Anthea, by his side. He led a remarkable life spending the majority of his career caring for many of the residents of Oxford county, as the chief surgeon of Alexandra hospital.
Sushil was born in Lahore, India on May 27, 1932 and knew from the beginning he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as a physician. He graduated from medical school at Calcutta University in India in 1955 and followed with a general surgery rotation in the United Kingdom. There he met a wonderful nurse, named Anthea, and though he’d never admit it, it was love at first sight. And when they found out they shared exactly the same birthday (May 27, 1932), they knew it was meant to be. And so it was, they were married August 26, 1960 in Sheffield, England. From there, Sushil accepted a position in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The next few years in Winnipeg, while important in establishing his professional career, were far more meaningful for two reasons – Anita and Neil. His two children were born one year apart in the cold days of January. But Sushil’s love and devotion for his children could thaw any minus 40 degree temperatures Winnipeg could throw at him.
The family moved to Ingersoll, Ontario in 1968 where Sushil would become the General Surgeon at Alexandra Hospital. It was here he would spend the next 48 years of his life, with almost 45 of them dedicated to saving and improving the quality of lives of any and all that crossed the threshold of the hospital. His dedication to the Hippocratic Oath was unwavering and unmatched.
When not in the operating room, or fighting to keep the hospital open in the face of government bureaucracy, Sushil could be found at home playing games with his children, tending his rose and vegetable gardens, at the Ingersoll Golf and Country Club, attending the theatre or just entertaining friends at home. As anyone could attest, Sushil loved engaging in any discussion related to world politics, travel, medicine or the human race, in general. Another passion of Sushil and Anthea’s was traveling the world and together, (always together) visiting over 25 countries throughout the years.
Sushil’s memories will remain forever etched in the hearts of his loving wife Anthea, his beautiful daughter Anita, his wonderful son Neil and his incredible wife, Ivana and their three outstanding boys, his grandsons, Sebastian, Lucas and Marco.
The Warma family will be celebrating the life of their husband and father on November 5, 2016 at the Ingersoll Golf and Country Club from 2-5 PM. They would suggest that donations could be made in Dr. Warma’s honour to either the Alexandra Hospital Foundation or the charity of their choice.
