Obituary for Denny Stroud

STROUD, Dennis Lee

Our Denny, born on December 13, 1945, was the light of our lives. He truly was our sunshine. At family gatherings, he would share endless stories about happenings at the farm, over heaping piles of his favorite mashed potatoes, all while sporting his Sunday best, consisting of jean overalls and a plaid button-up. Special occasion was never complete without Denny cracking wholesome jokes about his daughter-in-law’s cooking that was according to him, “sub-par” at best, consisting of “packin’” and “roadkill”, topped with “what is this - glue?!” for gravy. With a sideways glance and a subtle wink just quick enough for those who knew to watch for it, Denny would break out in an endearing belly laugh that would have the whole table roaring in laughter. Ironically, Denny himself was the glue that held all family gatherings together.

When he returned to the farm to carry out his day's work, he would greet the cows by name, tinker in the garage on his fixer-upper antique vehicles and look after stray cats and dogs that needed shelter. In the summer months, Denny would take his grandchildren out by the water with bird seed in hand, calling for the chickadees to pay them a visit. These were some of our fondest memories.

Denny was an incredibly talented woodworker, who prided himself in making the most stunning bird houses for his sweety, Mary Bishop, while honing his skills alongside his stepson, Steve, whom he deeply adored and respected. Mary and Denny frequently found themselves in Port Dover, settling in next to the water, watching the boats and listening to the birds over a delicious meal of fish and chips. Mary holds the memories of her and Denny close to her heart, as her beloved sweetheart and closest friend.

Denny was known by all who met him for his bright blue eyes, handsome sheepish grin and the purity in his belly laugh that would make those near and far giggle in unison. Those who had the honour of being loved by Denny, had the rare privilege of being embraced wholeheartedly by an angel here on Earth. He had a heart so pure and a soul so true; he will forever remain our world.
