Obituary for Brian Winslow KEMPSTER

Brian Kempster

“He fought a good fight, he finished his course, he kept his faith and there is laid up for him a crown.” (2 Timothy 4).

Kempster, Brian Winslow, of Chartwell Oxford Gardens Retirement Home, Woodstock, Ontario, who entered God’s Kingdom by salvation and went to sleep with Jesus on the 28th day of December 2023.

He is predeceased by his wife Veronica (2018).

Born December 29, 1932, at Welsford, NB., Brian graduated from Saint John Vocational School in 1949 where he earned a gold medal for the fastest typist in the Province that year.

Completed first part of his Bachelor of Arts Studies at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, Quebec and completed his Bachelor of Arts at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B. Earned his Bachelor of Law at U.N.B. in 1962 & completed the Osgoode Hall Bar Admission course in 1964.

Called to the NB Bar in 1962 and to the Ontario Bar in 1964, he first practiced law with specialty in civil litigation in St. Thomas with the Hennessey, Kempster & Gunn Law Firm 1964-1976 and went into private practice 1976-2004. He continued his practice in Ingersoll, since 2004 until he retired in 2017.

Before Law Brian worked as Male Secretary with Saint John, NB, Irving Oil Corporation (1949-1951) and with the CNR in Moncton and Montreal (1951-1956). Brian worked as a male secretary and later as Personnel Manager with the United States Air Force Distant Early Warning Line (1957-1958).

In his youth Brian was active in Cubs, Scouting and attended Canada’s first Boy Scout Jamboree in Ottawa in 1949. He was a drummer in 2 High School bands and in the school orchestra. In high school he was an army cadet, and in 1951 joined the Army Reserves in Moncton, NB.

When working in Montreal, Brian played steel & acoustic guitar with “The Down Yonder Boys” on weekends at the Montford Inn, north of Montreal (1954-1955).

In St. Thomas Brian was active with the Elgin Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, he instituted the first Ontario “Miss Hope” Cancer fundraising program, was secretary of the Elgin Law Association, solicitor for the Association of Community Living (1965-1990) and was an active member of the Canadian Bar Association, becoming a member of the Advocates’ Society and Ontario Trial Lawyers Association in the 2000’s.

He was a member of the US Christian Legal Society, was on the Board of Join the Family Christian Ministries (the John Wesley White national TV program) (1978-2003), and as a lawyer for John Wesley White he travelled to 8 Billy Graham North American and Oxford, England Crusades. He was a member of and was on the founding Committee of Canada’s Christian Legal Fellowship and spoke as a layman in Churches across Ontario (1975-1998).

The love of his life was his beloved wife Veronica, (2018) and one great love of Veronica and Brian was Linger Long Lodge, a 41 – acre Christian retreat center with spring, summer and fall teaching ministries (located near Parry Sound). For 25 years Brian and 98 ministers of music and pastor teachers taught about bible principles of living (1975-2000) at Linger Long Lodge, in 25 years LLL had 10,000 guests.

He was the founder of the first Canadian Jesus outdoor festival (Jesus “76” Canada) in Brantford, Ontario.

Friends will be received at the McBeath-Dynes Funeral Home, 246 Thames Street South, Ingersoll, on Tuesday January 2, 2024. from 10-11am with the funeral service at 11am. Interment to follow at Ingersoll Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alexandra Hospital Foundation.
